As a Siemon Certified Installer, with proven success for Genesis, we were the trusted partner chosen to lead the installation of the complete network for Genesis' stunning new six-storey HQ office block in St Paul's, London.
Delivery of the new infrastructure was to a tightly time-controlled schedule that demanded complete transformation from an impressive shell to a fully-operational state in just five months - all with a zero downtime imperative. This meant that Siemon and Xtreme were amongst the first companies to send engineers to St Paul’s in order to pull the 72km of cable required to flood the site.
With network resilience front of mind, Xtreme ensured that backbone and inter-floor links were run by a variety of routes for failsafe operation. This included the 12-core fibre optic backbone and copper links from the data centre on the third floor to the server rooms on each of the remaining five floors.
The Xtreme approach was to work extended hours and to operate a shift system that saw 1400 horizontal cables coiled and terminated on every floor in under three weeks. From this first fix stage, we then ran cables from cabinets to distribution boxes, awaiting the furniture before finally running connections to each desk. We prepared a patching schedule that saved time for Genesis in the final stages of the installation and provided an engineer on site to support the move.
There were many different parties involved on site at all times, so it was essential for our team to work alongside other contractors. This was supported by weekly meetings with Genesis where any issues could be raised, discussed and fixed quickly. Siemon took an active role in the project management of the infrastructure install and ensured that technical expertise was on call at all times. This transparent and collaborative approach allowed best practice to be shared between the teams and learning for all involved on the project.
We also installed a new Siemon rear door ice pack system. The advanced cabinets have an ice pack built into the rear doors for system cooling, as well as offering space savings and easier navigation for cable routing. The project involved the installation of over 600 Cat 6A Z-Max outlets, along with single and multimode fibre backbones between each floor. Within the main Comms Room, there were cabinets that included ice pack rear door cooling, replacing the proposed traditional air conditioning. Our main challenge during this project was to minimise equipment space within the main Comms Room, hence the use of the ice pack rear door cooling system, which was built into the cabinet doors. In addition, it also allows for considerable cost savings to be made, as the heat from the network equipment will now be cooled at source.
It was essential for us to hit the handover date with zero downtime. The quality and ease of installation of Siemon’s systems meant that we could work rapidly and confidently. Our strategy was to get ahead of the scheduled programme in order to allow capacity for any additional requirements that could have been added by Genesis.
