The appointment followed our most successful year in business, having recorded our highest annual turnover figure of £2.2 million for the financial year ended January 2013, an increase of 10 per cent from the previous year. A strong record of investment in the latest communication equipment and methodology allowed us to secure major cabling contracts with organisations such as Network Rail and Trump International Golf Links in 2012.
New contracts in the energy sector also contributed to our success, including several onshore blown fibre projects on behalf of ConocoPhillips. Overseas offshore works, such as a £250,000 contract with the Chevron-operated Big Foot platform during its time in Korea, were secured as a result of investment in specialist offshore training for Xtreme’s fibre and data engineers.
Mr McCarthy was the first employee to join Xtreme in its opening year of trading in 2003. Staff numbers have since increased to 42 and the company has extended its presence to include an additional UK base and one overseas. MD Graeme Duncan feels that the contribution and loyalty of his staff has been important to the development of the business.
“Martin forms part of a small number of long-serving staff members who have helped the business grow and develop over the past ten years,” he said. “His combination of technical expertise and communication skills is valued highly by our clients. In recent years, Martin has taken responsibility for many of Xtreme’s larger projects and has proven himself to be extremely capable. His appointment as Projects Director is both fitting and deserved.
“The past few years have been quite tough for the network infrastructure sector but the outlook is more positive, particularly in the north-east. We have been fortunate to grow our business in this difficult economic climate. This can be attributed to the past decisions we’ve made about the future direction of the business, the continued investment we have made in equipment, facilities and training, and the hard work and commitment of Xtreme’s team.”
Commenting on his appointment, Martin McCarthy said: “I am looking forward to applying my technical knowledge and project management skills in my new role. Having watched the business grow and diversify over the past ten years, I am excited about helping to drive its future development into new markets and areas of expertise.”
